There's a shift that happens to skin every winter and most people either don't notice it until damage is done or assume it's just something to put up with. Tight skin, dullness, unexpected sensitivity, dry patches where there weren't any before. None of that is inevitable. It's just your skin responding to a change in conditions - and it's very fixable.
Here's what's actually going on and what to do about it.
Your barrier is taking a hit
The combination of cold air outside and central heating inside is genuinely rough on your skin's barrier. Low humidity dries the air out, and a compromised barrier means moisture escapes faster than usual and irritants get in more easily. This is why skin that's normally fine suddenly feels reactive, tight or sensitive in winter.
The fix is barrier support, not more moisturiser piled on top of a compromised surface. You need ingredients that actually repair and reinforce - niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptides.
The Synergie Vitamin B serum is one of our most recommended products for exactly this reason. Niacinamide-rich, calming, and genuinely effective at restoring barrier function without feeling heavy or greasy. Pair it with the Evolve Multi Peptide Cream - a rich, clean moisturiser that seals everything in overnight. That combination alone will change how your skin feels within a week.
Hydration needs to be layered, not just applied
One moisturiser is not enough in winter, especially if you're in a heated environment most of the day. Hydration works in layers - a water-binding ingredient first, then something to lock it in.
The Evolve Hyaluronic Serum 200 is the first step. Apply it to slightly damp skin before your moisturiser and it draws moisture in and holds it there. Follow with the Evolve Multi Peptide Cream or your usual moisturiser and your skin will hold onto that hydration for far longer than if you'd just applied the moisturiser alone.
Don't drop your SPF
This is the one we see every winter. Clients who are diligent about SPF in summer quietly stop wearing it in June because it doesn't feel necessary. UV is still present in winter, even on overcast days, and if you're investing in corrective treatments or using active ingredients in your routine, you need to protect that investment year-round.
Synergie ÜberZinc SPF is the one we recommend because it sits beautifully under makeup, doesn't pill and works as your final morning step without adding bulk to your routine. If SPF has felt heavy or annoying in the past, this one usually changes that.
Winter is the best time to introduce actives
If you've been curious about AHAs, retinol or vitamin C but worried about sensitivity or sun exposure, winter is genuinely the right time to start. Lower UV levels mean less risk and your skin is more responsive to corrective ingredients when it's not fighting daily sun damage.
The Synergie AHA/BHA exfoliant is worth introducing into your weekly routine right now. It refines texture, keeps congestion clear and supports cell turnover - and the results compound over a few months of consistent use. Start once a week and build from there.
For vitamin C, the Synergie Effica C is a strong winter choice. It targets dullness and uneven tone, stimulates collagen and works particularly well in the months when your skin isn't getting any natural brightening from the sun. You'll notice the difference in your skin's clarity within a few weeks.
Your skin loves consistency more than it loves products
The most common thing we see is clients switching products every few weeks because they're not seeing instant results. Skin needs time. Most active ingredients need a minimum of four to six weeks of consistent use before you see meaningful change. Winter is actually a great season to commit to a routine and leave it alone - you're not sweating it off, swimming in salt water or dealing with the disruption of summer.
Pick your products, use them consistently, and trust the process.
If your skin needs more than a routine
Sometimes the right at-home products aren't enough on their own - especially if you're dealing with congestion, pigmentation, dehydration that won't shift or skin that's been neglected for a while. That's where in-clinic treatments come in.
Our Deep Winter Facial ($185, 60 min, both locations) is built around exactly this time of year. If you haven't had a facial in a while or you want to give your routine a proper reset, it's a good place to start. Ask about our series of three for CIT, IPL or our Powerhouse Facial if you want to see real corrective results before spring.
